In this painting, a soft blue color is used to create shadows on the white paper, creating the impression of snow. Use shadows to:
1. Identify shapes of objects covered by snow
2. Show the direction of the light source
3. Emphasize the cool temperature
4. Establish mounds of snow, as in the foreground, and areas that are flat, such as the middle ground and on the frozen stream (barely visible) behind the largest rock formation.
5. Reflect the color of the sky Note also the snow on the trees in the background. If you forgot to preserve areas of white for snow on the trees, apply white gouache, white acrylic paint or a product such as Susan Scheewe White Texture Medium. Remember to blend in a little blue for the shadow areas. |
