Falling by Janice Tingum Hydrus watercolors on YUPO paper 4.5" x 6.5" matted to 8" x 10", unframed $70 e-mail if interested in purchasing Falling started off as an experiment. I worked with two sheets of YUPO paper. One was quite heavy and opaque. The other was light and slightly transparent. Both sheets were about 14" x 20". To start, I sprayed the opaque piece of Yupo paper with water and then quickly dropped in Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus Fine Art Watercolors. These paints come in bottles with droppers, which makes it easy to squeeze drops of paint onto the paper. I used the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue. I allowed the paint to move around on the paper for a little bit, and then, while it was still wet, placed the transparent piece of YUPO paper over it. I left the painting alone for several days in order to allow the paint to set. I tested the corners every now and then to evaluate it. The amount of time it takes a painting to dry, of course, can vary according to the humidity of an artist's location. When I finally decided to peel apart the two pieces of Yupo paper, the paint was not completely dry, but set enough that it would not run. I pulled the top piece off at a diagonal. As I did so, it created diagonal streaks across the painting. The white circular areas were caused by air pockets between the two pieces of Yupo paper. Paint adhered to both pieces of the YUPO paper, giving me mirror images. From there, I cropped the images to achieve pleasing compositional designs. I call this one Falling because if makes me think of meteors falling through space.
